Shakhtar Donetsk have added another Nigerian talent to their ranks as Prosper Obah completes his move to the Ukrainian giants, Soccernet.ng reports.

The young midfielder, who can also operate as a forward or winger, joins a long list of Nigerians who have made an impact at the club over the years.

Babawo Mohammed, the scout who discovered Obah and now acts as his agent, shared the rationale behind his transfer to the Ukrainian club.

Mohammed expressed confidence that Obah has the potential to shine in Ukraine and make Nigerians proud on the European stage.

Why Prosper joined Shakhtar Donetsk

Mohammed explained that Shakhtar Donetsk’s commitment and vision for Obah were key factors in his decision to join the club.

“We discovered him during a scouting tournament in Nigeria where he showed a lot of talent, and I am happy that in such a short time, he is playing in a top-flight league, a major league. I am happy he has made good progress from Portugal and now in Ukraine. We took him to Vizela, and from there he moved to Cherkasy and now to the biggest team in Ukraine,” Mohammed told Footy-Africa.

He added: “He is very good in midfield but can also play as a forward or winger. He is multi-dimensional, and I am sure he will do well with the team. We had a few offers for him, but Shakhtar showed more determination to get him and were willing to offer him something solid over a good period of years. I hope he does well there and makes everyone happy and proud.”

How Many Nigerians Have Played for Shakhtar Donetsk?

Obah will become the fifth Nigerian to play for Shakhtar Donetsk, following in the footsteps of players who have left their mark in Ukraine.

Julius Aghahowa spent six years at the club as a centre-forward, scoring 54 goals in 171 matches, while defender Isaac Okoronkwo played 84 games between 2000 and 2003.

Emmanuel Osei Okoduwa had a shorter spell from 2006 to 2007, appearing in eight matches and scoring four goals, and Olarenwaju Kayode featured in 24 games in 2018, also scoring four times.

Obah continues the tradition of Nigerian players thriving at Shakhtar with this move, and he will be aiming to succeed during his time in Europe.
