“There’s a lot of work to be done” – Eric Chelle after Super Eagles’ opening day win at AFCON 2025

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has promised that the team will continue to improve following their 2-1 win over Tanzania on Tuesday.

The Nigerian team started their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a solid note, defeating the Taifa Stars of Tanzania 2-1 at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

Goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman sealed the victory for the three-time AFCON champions.

It was a decent performance from the Super Eagles, as they dominated the entire first half but allowed the Tanzanians to grow into the game in the second period.

Additionally, the goal they conceded was disappointing, as it could have easily been avoided if the players had remained focused throughout the match.

After the game, coach Chelle noted the lapses in their performance, but he added that the team will continue to improve as the tournament progresses.

“We have to analyze this win because we did a lot of good things in the first half,” Chelle said after the game, as observed by Soccernet.ng.

“We created chances to score and had lots of shots on goal. In the second half, we made two mistakes that allowed Tanzania to come back.

“We had more chances in front. We're happy with the three points. The key in AFCON is improving every game. After analysis tonight or tomorrow, we'll keep improving for the big Tunisia match.

“We need to defend better and more movement with the ball when we are not playing well. I congratulate my players, but there's a lot of work to be done.”

With that win, Nigeria sit second in Group C, two points adrift of Tunisia, who beat Uganda 3-1 in their opening game.

Who Will The Super Eagles Face Next At AFCON 2025?

Next up for the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is a game against Tunisia at Complexe Sportif De Fes.

That game is critical for both countries and would likely decide who finishes at the summit of Group C.

Tunisia are one of the top teams on the continent, so the game will be a stern test for Eric Chelle and his men.

Nonetheless, Nigeria has the quality. If Chelle gets his tactics right, they should be able to claim the maximum three points.
