Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Alebiosu has spoken of his pride and excitement after receiving his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2025, Soccernet.ng reports.
The former Arsenal academy player has described the moment as special for both himself and his family.
The 23-year-old was named in Eric Chelle’s final 28-man squad for the tournament in Morocco, which has already drawn reaction from his club, who admitted their disappointment at losing a key player during a crucial stage of the season.

The former Kortrijk player admitted the call-up came as a surprise, having initially been included in the enlarged provisional squad.
“I am obviously excited. Playing for my nation for the first time is obviously a pleasure,” he told BBC. “I am very much delighted, can’t wait to get started and help my nation reach big things.”
Reflecting on the moment he found out he had made the final list, the Rovers defender revealed he did not take anything for granted.
“To be honest, I was shocked. Obviously I was hoping, just playing my game, just focusing on here and whatever happens happens. When I got the call to the final squad I was delighted.”
How Alebiosu's Nigerian family perceived the call
The reaction from his family, he said, made the moment even more emotional.
“100 percent. Obviously my family are Nigerians, they were delighted. As soon as I got the news, I’ve never seen them so happy. It’s a great feeling.”

Born in London, the defender also confirmed that representing Nigeria had always been a strong ambition, despite being eligible for England.
“100 percent. It has always been a big part of me—Nigeria and England, one of them. And obviously Nigeria came calling, it’s something that I didn’t want to miss. It’s a big opportunity, especially at 23 years of age. It’s special.”
The inclusion of the former Arsenal defender means he could miss up to seven or eight matches for the EFL Championship side if Nigeria progresses deep into the tournament, including the AFCON final scheduled for January 18.
Although his club may feel the impact of his absence, the young defender is clearly relishing the chance to announce himself on Africa’s biggest stage with Nigeria.
