“Lookman hadn’t played much for Atalanta” — Chelle explains how he selects Super Eagles squad

“Lookman hadn’t played much for Atalanta” — Chelle explains how he selects Super Eagles squad

Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has explained the rigorous process behind his Super Eagles squad selection, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Lens defender insists that club minutes alone do not always determine who makes the national team list.

The manager, who is preparing for a crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon, explained the balance between club form, being tactically fit, and proven match-changing ability when picking players.

How Chelle picks his Super Eagles squad

Chelle made the remarks during an interview with CAF, citing Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as a key example.

Despite limited game time at Atalanta earlier in the season, the reigning African Player of the Year remained undroppable due to his match-winning quality—and Chelle admits such decisions are never easy in a talent-loaded Nigerian attack.

Chelle said: “There are at least 25 players who could play across the frontline — more than a full team. We try to manage it carefully. We’ve built a player-tracking system: we monitor around 80 players every week — roughly 80 matches to watch. Selection comes down to several criteria: first, are you playing for your club; second, are you performing; third, do you fit our tactical framework. Sometimes the tactical criterion wins. For example, Ademola Lookman hadn’t played much for Atalanta early in the season, but I couldn’t name a squad without the African Player of the Year. He can change a game in 15 minutes. Picking 25 is never easy — in Nigeria it’s even harder — which is why we work so hard.”

Chelle's comments follow fans' heavy debate on who should make the play-off squad, especially with fitness concerns surrounding several key players.

How Nigeria vs Gabon squad list can look

Based on Chelle’s criteria for selection, the Super Eagles squad to face Gabon is expected to feature a blend of proven talents.

Players like Victor Osimhen, Lookman, and Alex Iwobi are set to lead the line, while new faces could earn call-ups.

However, injuries to Terem Moffi and Cyriel Dessers, a suspension for Semi Ajayi in the first leg, and fitness checks on individuals such as Ola Aina and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru may force Chelle into key decisions. A possible first-time call-up for Bundesliga defender Moritz Jenz has also been rumoured.

Meanwhile, with just a few days left before camp opens for Nigeria in Morocco, Chelle is expected to announce his squad list at any moment.
