Nigeria were defeated by Ivory Coast in the AFCON 2023 final. They’ll be looking to go all the way in Morocco next month after failing to qualify for the World Cup…

Former Ghana and Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria as favourites to win the AFCON 2025 tournament next month, Soccernet.ng reports.

The three-time AFCON winners came close to lifting their fourth title in Ivory Coast last year, but ultimately lost to the host nation.

After failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles stars will want to put on a show to atone for their failure in getting to the Mundial.

Gyan tips Nigeria for AFCON success

With Ghana failing to qualify for the AFCON 2025 tournament, their total focus will be on avoiding a horrid show at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to cleanse the memories of the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Gyan, who graced the 2025 CAF Awards with his presence, named Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco as huge contenders for the AFCON 2025 tournaments.

“I think we’ve got a lot of giants who are going there,” the 39-year-old told Anita Jones at the 2025 CAF Awards Red Carpet.

“Ghana is out, which we were very disappointed by, but that’s okay, we qualified for the World Cup, unlike some other nations, yes.

“Nigeria did well, they were close the last time. Ivory Coast did well; we have a lot of teams.

“Morocco is also a strong contender, and they’re doing well.

“I will say these three countries, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco are my picks to win the AFCON 2025,” the Ghana’s record goalscorer concluded.

With Nigeria failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the AFCON 2025 tournament will be William Troost-Ekong’s final major appearance for the Super Eagles, and his last chance to win a major trophy in the green and white colours of the nation.
