When Nigeria international striker Victor Boniface signed for Werder Bremen on transfer deadline day, he brought attention to what is fast becoming a very Nigerian-influenced Bundesliga side that was under the radar.

Boniface made a loan move from Bayer Leverkusen to Bremen, where he is assured of a starting spot after falling off the pecking order at the Werks Elf. Boniface will certainly get a good Nigerian welcome in the locker room from the other Nigerian boys who are in the Bremen team.

And it offers Nigerian fans of the Bundesliga something to look forward to as the season heats up.

Defender Felix Agu, who, at the start of the summer, made his debut for the Super Eagles in the Unity Cup in London, is one of the leading Nigerian lights in the Bremen dressing room.

Born in Osnabrück, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Agu was part of the squad that played Nigeria’s last two 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. However, he didn’t receive any minutes under Eric Chelle.

His defensive wing play is still relevant for the squad as they meet again next month for the final qualifiers before preparations begin for the Africa Cup of Nations in December.

Justin Njinmah

Forward Justin Njinmah is another of the Nigerians in the Bremen team. Also born in Germany, he has a Nigerian father and is eligible to play for both countries.

Njinmah, 24, has already spoken about his interest in playing for Nigeria if the opportunity comes. He told Sport Bild that the Nigerian national team’s quality is something that impresses him.

The forward has already scored once for Bremen this season and is counted upon to make more goals as they challenge to keep their place in the top flight.

Isaac Schmidt

Switzerland international Isaac Schmidt can fly under the radar. But his middle name is Osas, a uniquely Nigerian name. His mother hails from Edo State.

In 2023, Schmidt was in Nigeria, where he visited his mom’s hometown. His social media is filled with references to Nigerian music, showing he may be Swiss, but he has a great connection to Naija.

Schmidt, a defender on loan from Premier League side Leeds United, scored his debut goal for Bremen in their incredible comeback 3-3 draw against Leverkusen before the international break.

Wesley Adeh

A youngster who has just been promoted to the senior side, Wesley Adeh is a promising defensive midfielder in the Werder Bremen team.

Born to Nigerian parents, Adeh has been playing for the German national youth teams – U17, U18 and currently U19s.
