Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has urged Nigerian fans to stand firmly behind the team as they prepare for their must-win 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Saturday in Uyo, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 2013 AFCON champions are under pressure in Group C after earlier slip-ups left them outside the qualification spots.
A failure to win their back-to-back fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa this month will dent their chances of securing the 2026 World Cup ticket.
Ekong on Rwanda Game
Troost-Ekong stressed that the focus and unity of both players and fans will be vital to getting Nigeria’s campaign back on track.
“We’re here now, just waiting for the last few players to arrive very shortly. I’m looking forward to having a full house in training tonight.
“The boys are very focused, and we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday. I want to thank the fans for their support, and I ask them to continue encouraging us—be there in the stadium on Saturday, keep praying for us, and rally with everyone else in Nigeria.
“It’s going to be an important set of games for us, starting on Saturday. We know the gravity of this game, and we’ll remain focused on our preparation, because that’s what will give us confidence for the match,” the former PAOK defender told reporters.
Super Eagles' Next Match
The Super Eagles will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo before travelling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa at the Toyota Stadium three days later.
Head coach Eric Sekou Chelle named a 23-man squad for the double-header, with Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze among the notable inclusions.
Nigeria will look to replicate their 2–0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali back in March, when Victor Osimhen’s brace secured all three points.
Victory on Saturday would lift Nigeria’s standing in the group and restore belief as the three-time African champions continue their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
