Nigeria-eligible Nnamdi Collins debuts for Germany – What it means for the Super Eagles

The Super Eagles of Nigeria might have lost out on another talent to Germany after Jamal Musiala and Karim Adeyemi, Soccernet.ng reports.

21-year-old Nigeria-eligible defender, Pharell Nnamdi Collins, made his debut for the German National Team last night against Slovakia as Julian Nagelsmann's side looks to progress in their 2026 World Cup qualification journey.

However, the Frankfurt centre-back didn't have the best performance last night as he was fielded at right-back, and had to be taken off at half-time, replaced by RB Leipzig's left-back, David Raum.

Germany's head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, revealed he fielded the youngster because he didn't have options to fill the right-back spot, and urged fans to give him time to settle in.

“He did not have a super good day, but I will not blame the player who has debuted,” the ex-Hoffenheim coach said in quotes revealed by Sport.De.

“Rather, he complained about the lack of support of the more experienced players; He expected experienced forces such as Antonio Rüdiger to pay more attention to him.

“We have a few alternatives internally, but we don't have a pool of five outstanding players to choose from; that's just how it is.

“It was the reason we moved Josh [Kimmich] there from the midfield. I don't want to pick on Nnamdi [Collins]. He played his first game.

“That was unfortunate. I also have to say that his opponent [Leo Sauer] was the best player on the pitch. The whole structure was extremely unstable.”

“The fact that a debutant didn't play a great game is my responsibility. He played. I selected him. I'm responsible for that, not him.

“He should keep pushing – and he brings a lot to the table. Something like that can also be instructive for a player,” the German coach concluded, throwing his weight of support behind the former Borussia Dortmund defender.

Bayern Munich defender, Joshua Kimmich, also urged Collins to keep his head in the game, and put in even greater performances for the German National Team.

“I think he is the last one to come. Especially if you give a debut, a new addition, you are dependent on the team a bit more.

“It depends on you coming into a functioning troupe. I hope that he won't make himself a big head, because it wasn't worse than all of us,” the ex-RB Leipzig man said.

What Collins‘ debut means for the Super Eagles

Nigeria can pretty much wave goodbye to the young central defender. Previously, Collins made it clear that his goal is to represent the German National team, following the steps of Karim Adeyemi and Jamal Musiala.

Both of these players were eligible to represent the Super Eagles, but chose Germany instead. Musiala previously mentioned he loves both Nigeria and Germany, and his decision to play for Die Mannschaft was down to where he felt the most comfortable.

While a 21-year-old playing in a World Cup qualifier doesn't automatically tie him down, it means he's slipping away from Nigeria's grasp.

According to FIFA Eligibility rules, playing in a World Cup qualifier does not automatically tie a player to a nation, provided the appearance(s) occurred before the player turned 21 and they did not play more than three competitive matches for their first country, and none of those matches were in the final of a tournament.

However, if the player is over 21, or has played more than three competitive matches, or the matches were in a World Cup final or continental championship, they remain cap-tied to that nation and cannot switch.

Since Collins turned 21 in January, and has made an appearance in a competitive match, he is considered cap-tied for Germany, shutting the door on a Super Eagles switch.
