Nigeria’s vote for the 2025 Women’s Yashin Trophy has been revealed, with the country’s representative journalist placing England’s Hannah Hampton above Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the final ballot, Soccernet.ng reports.

Multiple reports suggest that Tega Onojaife of Smooth 98.1 FM placed Hampton first, and Nnadozie second in her votes.

The Chelsea goalkeeper received votes from 47 out of the 50 journalists who voted for the Women’s Yachine Trophy.

The Women’s Yashin Trophy, introduced this year as part of the Ballon d’Or awards, honours the best female goalkeeper in world football.

The Former Aston Villa goalkeeper emerged as the inaugural winner, followed by Germany’s Ann-Katrin Berger in second place and Spain’s Cata Coll in third.

Nnadozie, who made history as the first African goalkeeper to be nominated, finished in fourth place after a stellar year with club and country.

The 24-year-old was instrumental in Nigeria’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, impressed in European competitions with Paris FC, and later secured a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

While Hampton earned Nigeria’s top vote, Nnadozie’s recognition remains significant for African football. Her ranking shows her growing reputation on the global stage.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, praised Nnadozie’s achievement, describing it as a remarkable feat for Africa.

“We heartily congratulate Chiamaka Nnadozie on her fourth-place finish in the race. It is a commendable feat given the calibre of goalkeepers she was up against. We believe in her capacity to win this trophy very soon.” Sanusi said.

Nndozie, having returned to Brighton, will be hoping to continue from where she left off and hopefully win the trophy as the first African someday.
