“La Liga is a fantastic option” – Ex-Super Eagles star backs Zaidu Sanusi’s Porto exit

Former Nigeria international Garba Lawal has advised Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi to consider leaving FC Porto this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.

This follows growing speculation about the Portuguese club’s willingness to part ways with the Nigerian international.

Sanusi, who has struggled with injuries over the past year, has reportedly been placed on the transfer list by Porto, with potential interest from clubs in Spain and England.

While the 26-year-old has denied any concrete approach from Leeds United, reports from AS suggest a possible loan move to Spanish side Real Oviedo is gaining momentum.

Lawal on Zaidu's Porto Exit

Reacting to the transfer talks, Lawal believes leaving the Portuguese club could help Sanusi rediscover his form.

“Injuries have been unkind to Zaidu, even though injuries are part of the game,” Lawal told Footy-Africa. “I heard Porto are looking to sell him, and I think it is time to also move on. He is a very good defender who can also play as a wing-back, so it should not be hard for him to find a club. But if Porto want to sell him, then he can move.”

Should the Super Eagles Star Leave Porto for LaLiga?

The former Super Eagles star added that remaining in familiar surroundings could benefit Sanusi, but he also welcomed a move to Spain if the opportunity arises.

“I really wish he can stay in Portugal because that is where he has been basically all his career, and he speaks the language well, so it will be easier there. However, Spain and La Liga is also a fantastic option for him if the club can get the deal done. It will be a great move, playing in Spain, which is similar to Portugal. I hope he gets a move and starts playing again.”

Sanusi joined Porto from Santa Clara in 2020 and has made over 100 appearances for the Dragons, winning multiple domestic titles.

However, recurring injuries have limited his impact over the past year, which has now prompted talks of a summer departure.
