Loan, wages, and £7m clause – Full breakdown of Chuba Akpom’s Ipswich transfer

Super Eagles-eligible striker Chuba Akpom’s move from Ajax to Ipswich Town is one of the EFL Championship’s most interesting transfers this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 29-year-old sealed a season-long loan to Portman Road after Ipswich hijacked a move that Birmingham City thought they had wrapped up.

The agreement gives Ipswich an immediate boost in attack while including terms that could make the deal permanent.

Chuba Akpom's Loan Spell at Portman Road

As announced by Ajax's official website, Akpom has joined Ipswich on a move that will see him spend the rest of the 2025/26 campaign in England.

As part of the agreement, the Championship side will cover around 60 percent of his current wages, as reported by TWTD.

At Ajax, the 29-year-old earns an estimated €31,900 per week—roughly £27,000—according to Capology and Salary Sport. This means Ipswich are paying him about €19,140 per week, the equivalent of £16,200 to £17,000, during his stay at Portman Road.

Potential Total Cost to Ipswich

The deal also comes with an obligation to buy should Ipswich secure promotion to the Premier League this season.

The agreed fee in that scenario is £7 million, mirroring the arrangement Birmingham City had in place before the switch in negotiations.

If promotion is achieved, Ipswich’s total outlay on Akpom could reach approximately £7.84 million, which includes his season’s wages during the loan spell and the permanent transfer fee. Without promotion, the forward will return to Ajax at the end of the campaign.

Why Ipswich Was His Choice

As earlier reported by Soccernet.ng, Akpom says the decision was driven by the club’s ambitions and style of play.

“I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense,” he told TownTV.

With Champions League experience at Lille and a recent spell at Ajax, Akpom believes he can add a winning mentality to a side aiming for a top-flight return.

If Ipswich fail to secure promotion, the striker will return to Ajax at the end of the season.
