Rangers FC: Three reasons why Cyriel Dessers should reject AEK Athens move

Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers finds himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war after Greek Super League champions AEK Athens tabled an offer reportedly worth ₦8 billion for the Rangers striker, Soccernet.ng reports.

The move, however, is far from straightforward.

While a switch to Athens might seem like a step forward financially, the decision could backfire on the former Cremonese attacker.

Here are three compelling reasons why Dessers should seriously reconsider accepting the Greek giants’ offer.

Reduced Visibility on the International Stage

Dessers has spent years knocking on the Super Eagles’ door, and while his international appearances have been limited, staying in the spotlight is crucial if he hopes to add to his caps.

The Scottish Premiership may not rank among Europe’s elite, but it is still more visible than the Greek Super League.

Playing regularly at Rangers—especially in European competitions—will give Dessers more visibility than in Athens.

With the 2025 AFCON preparations and World Cup qualifiers around the corner, now is not the time to disappear from the radar.

AEK Athens Don’t Really Need Him

While AEK Athens did make a formal offer, recent comments from their head coach, Marko Nikolic, suggest Dessers is not a top priority.

“No, because in attack we are good with Zini, Pierrot, Martial and even Eliasson,” the Serbian tactician said as earlier cited by Soccernet.ng.

That public declaration casts doubt on whether Dessers would walk into the starting XI — or even enjoy regular minutes.

The last thing the 30-year-old needs at this stage of his career is to become a squad player in a team that may not be fully invested in him.

Rangers Still Have Faith in the Super Eagles Star

Despite the transfer speculation, Rangers have shown no urgency to offload Dessers. In fact, the Ibrox club rejected AEK’s initial €4.5 million bid and remains firm on their £6 million valuation.

New manager Russell Martin has also voiced his eagerness to work with the Super Eagles striker:

“I’m expecting him to return on Monday and I’m looking forward to working with him.” he said as quoted by Sky Sports Scotland.

That vote of confidence, coupled with the chance to impress a new coach and lead the line in Scotland, could be just what Dessers needs to revitalise his club career.
