Super Eagles star, Paul Onuachu, has recently piqed the interest of top European clubs who are vying for his signature, Soccernet.ng reports.

Currently in the season of summer transfer, Onuachu's future remains a hot topic, and the battle for his signature may not be over yet.

The Nigerian international, who enjoyed a stellar loan spell at Turkish club Trabzonspor last season, is expected to leave Southampton permanently this summer.

Onuachu netted 17 goals in 25 league appearances for the Black Sea Storm, and sparking intense calls for a permanent return.

However, French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennes have emerged as a potential challenger to Trabzonspor’s pursuit, with reports suggesting the French side had opened talks with both Southampton and Onuachu’s camp.

Rennes, who are looking to bolster their attack ahead of a European push, were rumoured to have made a formal approach.

But in an exclusive update from Footy-Africa, sources close to Onuachu have denied any negotiations with Southampton or Rennes, and have insisted that the striker's current focus remains on finalising terms with Trabzonspor.

This casts doubt over Rennes’ alleged interest and suggests they may have been monitoring the situation from afar rather than actively engaging in talks.

Still, the situation remains fluid.

Southampton, now back in the EFL Championship, are reportedly holding out for a transfer fee in the region of £4.2–5 million, and Trabzonspor are working hard to match.

The Turkish side have already agreed to personal terms with the player, who is currently in Nigeria awaiting the green light to travel to Turkey for his medical.

Yet, Rennes could still pose a threat.

Financially stronger and competing in a more prestigious league, Rennes could swoop in with a late offer that appeals to both Southampton and the player.

If the Turkish club fails to meet the Saints’ asking price or delays the deal further, the door could open for the Ligue 1 side to hijack the move.

Soccernet Verdict: Still Trabzonspor’s Deal to Lose

While Rennes’ interest cannot be completely ruled out, Trabzonspor remain in pole position. Onuachu's comfort with the Turkish setup gives them a clear edge.

However, anything is possible in football—and if Rennes decide to make a firm move, the race could be revived.
