“My mum is Nigerian” – Ghanian midfielder reveals how Super Eagles botched his Unity Cup dream

Cercle Brugge and Ghana midfielder, Lawrence Agyekum, has revealed he harboured the dream of scoring against the Super Eagles during the 2025 Unity Cup tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

Eric Chelle's side won the tournament by defeating Jamaica on penalties after a 2-2 scoreline after ninety minutes, but they defeated Ghana in the semi-final, thanks to an own goal by Razak Simpson and a brilliant finish from Cyriel Dessers.

Agyekum, who has a Nigerian mother and Ghanaian father, had hoped to get on the scoresheet, in a bid to stir a bit of banter in the family, but that didn't happen.

The former Salzburg midfielder also didn't get a chance to achieve his dream as he was benched for the Jollof derby by Ghana's coach, Otto Addo, although he featured and scored in the third-place fixture against Trinidad and Tobago, even finding the back of the net.

“I had a dream that I scored my first national goal before the Unity Cup. For me, I was looking forward to scoring against Nigeria.

“My mum is Nigerian, so I just wanted to torment her a little bit, but it did not happen, and then against Trinidad, fortunately for me, I did score, and I was really happy the dream came true,” the three-cap Ghanaian said in quotes revealed by Ghana Guardian.

Ghana will not be participating in the AFCON 2025 tournament for the first time in two decades, and the central midfielder urged his teammates to focus on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Not qualifying for AFCON doesn’t mean we are a failure. We must focus on the World Cup and leave what is behind. The World Cup is the tournament ahead of us, and that’s where our attention should be,” the 21-year-old told My Joy Online.

Nigeria also face a daunting task of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they've won just one of their four qualifying games.
