Bargain release clause could help Everton land another Super Eagles star

Everton could be set to continue their long-standing tradition of fielding top Nigerian talent, with renewed interest in Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Toffees have been home to several Super Eagles greats over the years — Daniel Amokachi and Joseph Yobo, to Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Victor Anichebe, Ademola Lookman, and more recently, Alex Iwobi.

Now, the Merseyside club may be plotting a move for the next in line.

As cited by GiveMeSports, Everton have revived their pursuit of Wilfred Ndidi, who was previously linked with a move to Goodison Park last summer.

Earlier reports from talkSPORT claimed the Nigerian international could be available for as little as £9 million, due to a relegation release clause in his Leicester City contract.

However, that bargain may still be on the table.

Ndidi Signs New Contract at Leicester

While the 27-year-old signed a new deal with Leicester on July 12, 2024, extending his contract until June 2027, the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2024–25 season has reportedly reactivated a £9 million release clause in that contract.

This means that the Nigerian may be on his way to Goodison Park this summer if a deal materializes between his club and the Toffees.

Ndidi made 30 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 season, contributing a goal and five assists. Despite his strong performances, he couldn’t help Leicester avoid the drop back to the Championship.

Everton’s Nigerian Legacy Could Tempt Ndidi

If completed, a move to Goodison Park would see Wilfred Ndidi join an elite group of Nigerian stars who have worn the Everton shirt. The club holds special memories for Nigerian fans, particularly from the early 2000s to the present day.

With the likes of Amokachi, Yobo, Aiyegbeni, and Iwobi all donning the blue jersey, Everton has long been a club where Nigerian players have felt at home.

Ndidi, who made his debut for the national team in 2015, remains a key figure in the Super Eagles midfield and will play an important role as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 AFCON tournament.
