Chuba Akpom: Ajax dump Super Eagles hopeful via WhatsApp text

Dutch Eredvisie club Ajax have informed Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom that he is surplus to requirements at the club, Soccernet.ng reports.

The last two years have been topsy-turvy for Akpom, as he has struggled to adjust to life at Ajax since joining from English Championship club Middlesbrough.

The 29-year-old attacker has had to deal with changing environments, managerial changes, and Ajax's instability.

Last season, he left during the January transfer window to join Lille. He had to play second fiddle to Jonathan David. Akpom still went on to contribute three goals and one assist in 16 appearances.

However, the French club decided against signing him permanently, as they ended the relationship by the end of last season.

That put Akpom's future in the balance. And in a new development, Ajax have informed the Arsenal-trained forward that he is no longer needed. According to Talk Sport, instead of doing it formally, they did via a WhatsApp text.

Aside from Akpom, the Dutch giants did this with six other players. Their plan is to offload all of them to finance new signings this summer.

What is next for Chuba Akpom?

As at the time of this report, no club has been substantially linked with Chuba Akpom yet. Nonetheless, with Ajax's recent move the speculations might begin soon.

The former Middlesbrough man is valued at €7 million on Transfermarkt, and can be devastating in front of goal as he showed in his last season at Middlesbrough.

Akpom was born to Nigerian parents in England, but he represented the latter at youth level. He is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles though, as he has not played for the Three Lions.

However, he has since switched allegiance to Nigeria. But he is yet to get a call-up. Definitely, he would factor in international football when he is moving to his first club.
