Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed what Nigerians should expect from the upcoming 2025 Unity Cup as preparations continue for Nigeria’s international commitments later in the year, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Unity Cup, set to be held in the coming days, is expected to give the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions a competitive platform to test and evaluate fresh talent from the domestic league.

Chelle, who recently named his squad for the mini-tournament, said the competition will allow his coaching staff to try out new players in different roles—particularly those drawn from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), and presents an opportunity to assess the team's tactical depth ahead of the more demanding 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and AFCON 2025 fixtures.

“We’re looking forward to taking part in the Unity Cup as it will give us the chance to try out a few new players in different roles,” Chelle said to NFF Comms. “It will help us strengthen our squad before the matches in September and October.”

Chelle's decision to include several NPFL standouts has been seen as a way to broaden the national team’s talent pool, and give locally based players a chance to fight for regular spots alongside Europe-based stars.

With matches lined up against Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica, the tournament is expected to be a vital part of Chelle’s way to rebuild the team following Nigeria’s recent struggles on the international stage.
