Super Eagles players, Frank Onyeka and Igoh Ogbu have shared their thoughts on the ongoing 2025 Unity Cup and the Super Eagles' passionate 2-1 win over arch-rivals Ghana, Soccernet.ng reports

Both players donning the Nigerian jersey at the Gtech Community Stadium were crucial in their victory which seeded them against Jamaica in the final of the tournament.

Speaking to reporters at the Super Eagles’ camp, Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka admitted that although the match was classified as a friendly, the players treated it as more than that.

“You know, Nigeria and Ghana—it’s always a rivalry,” Onyeka began. “So for us, we didn’t see it as a friendly. We took it seriously because we never want to lose against Ghana. We know the history, the big rivalry.”

The Super Eagles raced to a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Cyriel Dessers and an own goal from Razak Simpson, before Ghana pulled one back in the second half.

“We scored twice early, and though the second half wasn’t our best, we held on. We’re just happy we won the game,” Onyeka added.

Meanwhile, Slavia Prague defender Igoh Ogbu, who received his second call-up to the national team, also expressed deep pride in wearing the green and white.

“That’s the pride of every young kid playing football—to represent Nigeria,” Ogbu said. “For me, I’m just grateful to God. Every opportunity to wear this shirt is something I cherish.”

The 24-year-old centre-back drew inspiration from Nigerian football legends, particularly former Inter Milan star Taribo West.

“There are a lot of top defenders from Nigeria I watched growing up. Taribo West’s videos are amazing—the passion he played with is something that drives us younger ones,” he said.

The Super Eagles will face Jamaica next in the final of the Unity Cup before turning their attention to crucial qualifiers later this year, including a blockbuster tie against South Africa and a potential AFCON campaign in Morocco.

Please note that the Frank Onyeka being linked to Bochum is not the Frank Onyeka currently playing for Nigeria Super Eagles. Another Frank Onyeka (18 years old Francis-Ikechukwu Onyeka) currently on the books of Bayer Leverkusen is being linked for a loan move to Bochum who were relegated from Bundesliga this past season. The move is intended to give the young star (an attacking midfielder and Germany youth international) more playing time to aid his development.
So, it’s not the Super Eagles star that is being linked with Bochum who finished last in the Bundesliga and will play in Germany Second Division (Bundesliga-2).
