Perfect turnaround: Super Eagles star clinches SPFL golden boot despite early stutter

Super Eagles and Rangers forward, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers, has won the William Hill Premiership Golden Boot Award after a brilliant individual campaign, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 30-year-old was put up for sale by the Record Scottish Champions after a dreadful start to the 2024/2025 season. His inconsistency in front of goal didn't help either, and that has summed up his stay at Ibrox since he arrived in the summer of 2023.

Somehow, Dessers turned it all around. A brilliant goal against Aberdeen at the start of the year and a well-struck strike against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League caused the Gers to believe in the Belgium-born Nigerian again, and he ended the season with 29 goals and seven assists in all club competitions.

After winning the Sam English Bowl Award, Dessers has now clinched the William Hill Premiership Golden Boot, beating competition from Celtic's Daizen Maeda and Dundee United's Simon Murray.

The Nigerian scored 18 league goals in 35 appearances, while Maeda and Murray could only score 16 in 34 and 38 league games, respectively.

Dessers has proven to be an enigma who can frustrate and impress simultaneously due to his special ability to make simple things hard and to make hard things look easy. Nonetheless, he's 5th on Rangers' list of quickest goalscorers to hit a century of games, scoring 45 goals and providing 16 assists, and his performances drew praise from club legend, Kris Boyd.

Additionally, Dessers‘ numbers put him in third place on Rangers’ all-time list of scorers who had the most goals in their first 100 appearances in the 21st century, just behind Shota Arveladze (48), Alfredo Morales (57), and club legend, Kris Boyd (68).

With new owners and a new coach coming in ahead of next season, many have suggested Rangers might part ways with the Nigerian International. Wherever his future lies, one thing is clear: Dessers might not be the prettiest finisher, but he gave his all in a Gers jersey.
