Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has announced his appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund midfielder shared the news on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, where he expressed his excitement at joining football’s rule-making body.

“Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! IFAB is the global guardian of football’s laws, responsible for determining the laws of football, shaping the beautiful game for players and fans worldwide. Honoured to contribute to its mission!” Oliseh wrote.

Being appointed to IFAB, here are a few key things to know about the football association.

1. IFAB Writes the Laws of Football

IFAB is the only body authorised to write, update, and interpret the Laws of the Game. Everything from offside rules to VAR protocols is decided by this board.

2. IFAB Predates FIFA

Established in 1886, IFAB came before FIFA and was created by the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. FIFA only joined in 1913.

3. It’s Made Up of Just Five Members

Despite its immense influence on global football, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) consists of just five voting members. FIFA, representing its 211 member associations, holds four votes, while the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland each hold one vote.

To approve any changes to the Laws of the Game, a minimum of six out of eight votes is required. This means that even with FIFA’s majority, it must secure the support of at least two of the four British associations for any rule change to pass.

4. It Oversees All Rule Changes and Trials

Whether it’s VAR, goal-line technology, or new time-keeping systems, IFAB tests and approves innovations before they become official football laws.

5. It Holds an Annual General Meeting

The IFAB Annual General Meeting is where potential rule changes are discussed and voted on. It’s seen as one of the most influential meetings in global football every year.
