Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo is reportedly close to securing a move to Major League Soccer side New York City FC, Soccernet.ng reports.

The experienced centre-back has been without a club since parting ways with Turkish outfit Kasimpasa on January 28, 2025.

Despite being a free agent, Omeruo has attracted strong interest from several clubs, with MLS emerging as his most likely destination.

According to Africafoot, New York City FC are in advanced talks to sign the Nigerian international, with plans to finalise the move ahead of the next MLS season.

Omeruo Regrets Time At Chelsea

The 31-year-old played under a close ally of José Mourinho, Aitor Karanka, during his time at Middlesbrough, which recently turned out to be a regret for the Nigerian.

“I think going back to Middlesbrough instead of QPR who were in the Premier League at the time, was a mistake

“Jose Mourinho wanted me to play in Middlesbrough because the manager was his friend [Aitor Karanka] and he also played his style of football. But that was my one mistake because I wasn’t getting game time.

“At a point I lost my head and had a bad season. The next season I could have played for Chelsea, but I injured my shoulder and that was it,” he told Brila Media.

Omeruo to Join Fellow Super Eagles Stars

Should the deal go through, Omeruo would join fellow Super Eagles stars Chidozie Awaziem and Alhassan Yusuf, who play for Colorado Rapids and New England Revolution, respectively.

New York City FC are reportedly looking to bolster their defense ahead of the new season, and Omeruo’s experience in the top 10 leagues in Europe makes him a top target for the club.
