Head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Eric Sekhou Chelle, has revealed how his side can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their poor start, Soccernet.ng reports.

Prior to Chelle's appointment, the three-time AFCON champions were without a win from four games in their qualifying group, but the Malian breathed hope into the team by coaching them to a 2-0 win over Rwanda.

However, a draw against Zimbabwe has made their journey even more complicated, as they're now six points behind table toppers, South Africa, who are poised to go to their first World Cup outing since the 2010 edition.

To qualify, Nigeria have to win all of their four remaining games, while hoping their opponents drop points, and Chelle has singled out the fixture against South Africa as the potential turning point.

“It’s an obligation we win in South Africa, but the most important match for us right now is Rwanda in Uyo.

“South Africa are a good side, but for that game we cannot afford to allow them play, but first, we have to beat Rwanda at home and then we will focus on the game in South Africa,” the Malian said in quotes revealed by Brila.

Nigeria will welcome Rwanda to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on the 3rd of September before travelling to South Africa to lock horns with Bafana Bafana three days later.
