Transfers: 4 goals in 9 games – Has Onuachu found a way out as Southampton faces EPL exit?

Paul Onuachu

The English Premier League 2024-25 season campaign appears to be nearing its end after 31 games were concluded over the weekend, Soccernet.ng reports.

With just seven games left, Southampton finds itself sinking deeper into the relegation zone and has officially been relegated with just 10 points accumulated in 31 games this season.

Amid this, Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu, has quietly found his form this season after going goalless in his first season with the Saints.

The towering 6ft 7in striker has now scored four goals in his last 9 Premier League games for the St. Mary’s outfit. While those numbers may not scream headlines, they are a clear upturn in form for a player who endured a frustrating start to life in England.

After struggling during his initial spell in the Premier League, Onuachu returned to Southampton with renewed confidence following his successful loan spell at Trabzonspor in Turkey, where he rediscovered his scoring touch with 17 goals in 25 matches.

Since returning to Hampshire from Trabzon, the Nigerian international has improved and has had sharper instincts in front of the goal.

However, his return to form may have come too late to save Southampton, who are currently rooted to the bottom of the table.

With only seven games remaining, the club is staring down the barrel of relegation, and even a miracle cannot save them from escaping a return to the EFL Championship.

For Onuachu, though, this current run of form may just be the key to an exit route back to top-flight football, whether in England or elsewhere in Europe.

The Nigeria international was strongly linked with a move away from Southampton last summer, with Trabzonspor pushing for his return on a permanent deal. This may now be the perfect time to make that move happen.

Notably, Trabzonspor could face competition from their Super Lig rivals, Besiktas, who are also reportedly eyeing a move for the Nigerian striker.

Standing out in a struggling side is never easy, but Onuachu’s goals could attract interest from clubs in search of a traditional centre-forward with an eye for goal. His recent form may have set him up perfectly for a summer exit.
