IFAB approves new goalkeeper rule: How it affects Nwabali, Uzoho, Okoye, others

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has introduced a major rule change set to take effect from the 2025/26 season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The rule is slated to directly impact goalkeepers, including Super Eagles trio Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, and Maduka Okoye.

According to the new regulation, if a goalkeeper holds onto the ball for more than eight seconds, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick instead of an indirect free kick.

This decision is expected to curb time-wasting from goalkeepers, including the Super Eagles goalies and keep the game flowing.

How Does This Affect Super Eagles Goalkeepers?

Nwabali, who has been Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper in recent months, is known for his composed style of play but has occasionally been guilty of time-wasting.

However, he will now have to be even more cautious when managing possession under pressure. The Chippa United shotstopper often relies on quick decision-making, but this rule could force him to speed up his actions even further.

For Uzoho, who has faced criticism over his performances, particularly in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign, this change might add extra pressure.

The Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper has occasionally been accused of hesitating too long with the ball at his feet, and he will now need to refine his decision-making to avoid costly mistakes.

Meanwhile, Okoye, who has discovered his form at Udinese, is known for his ability to play out from the back. The rule change may benefit him if he can adapt quickly, but any lapses in concentration could see him punished with a set-piece.

A Game-Changer for Goalkeepers

This adjustment by IFAB is expected to influence tactical approaches worldwide, with teams likely instructing goalkeepers to release the ball faster to avoid unnecessary corner kicks.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is expected to prepare his goalkeepers to handle the new regulation ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Although, the Confederation of African Football is yet to release a statement to support the new rule.
