“A dream come true”- Werder Bremen left-back declares intention to dump Germany for Nigeria’s Super Eagles

Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has declared his intention to play for Nigeria despite representing Germany at youth level, Soccernet.ng reports.

Over the years many players based abroad have switched allegiance to represent Nigeria by virtue of their origin. In the Super Eagles fold many players could have chosen to represent other countries but opted for Nigeria.

For example, Maduka Okoye chose Nigeria over Germany, William Troost-Ekong chose Nigeria over the Netherlands, while stars like Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo, Ademola Lookman, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru all chose the Super Eagles over England.

The latest player to join that trend is Werder Bremen star Agu. The 25-year-old left-back has been in Werder Bremen's books since 200, and has registered four goals and eight assists in 88 appearances.

In a recent interview with Oma TV, Agu revealed that he wants to play for Nigerian.

“To play on the national level was always a dream of mine and I had to make half of the decision already because I played for the German under 21 team,” Agu said.

“I did this to kind of keep this open, but I've talked a lot to Justin Njimah about playing for the national team and we think it would be like a dream come true to play for Nigeria.

“Also, it would put a smile on our fathers' faces if we represent Nigeria,” Agu added.

Who is Felix Agu?

Felix Agu was born in Osnabruck, Germany in September 27, 1999 to a Nigerian father and a German mother.

However, having spent his early years in Germany, he chose to play for the German national team at youth level. The left-back has strong dribbling, agility, balance, and reactions.

Agu represented Germany's Under-21 team twice in 2019, but he has not gotten a senior call-up since then.

However, now that the Werder Bremen star has sent out an open invitation to the Nigeria Football Federation, he could get called up soon.

Felix Agu primarily operates from left-back and that is a postion that is not sealed yet. Bruno Onyemaechi has been a a regular in that position in the past year, but there is still a big room for improvement from his end.

The Super Eagles do not have a lot of good options in that position, and Agu's declaration gives them an extra option.

Although he is not playing at the highest level yet, he could be a decent option for coach Eric Chelle to look at.

The Franco-Malian has already revealed his Super Eagles squad for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers later this month. But going into the next FIFA window, Agu could get his chance.
