The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly taken its first step in addressing the Super Eagles’ coaching situation ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian football body has been searching for the ideal candidate to take up the role after Finidi George’s brief appointment in 2024, which ended after just two months.

According to reports from ScoreNigeria, the NFF held a meeting this week regarding the appointment of a new foreign coach to lead the Super Eagles.

The incoming foreign coach is expected to guide the team to Kigali in March for their World Cup qualifiers against group leaders Rwanda and another match against Zimbabwe.

While no official statement has been issued by the NFF—leaving room for speculation—many have backed NFF Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen to continue leading the Super Eagles.

After the NFF's failed deal with Bruno Labbadia in 2024, Eguavoen, alongside Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, took charge of the team.

Under their guidance, the Super Eagles secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and the Super Eagles B team defeated Ghana to qualify for the CHAN 2024 tournament.

Earlier, Eguavoen advocated for a home-grown coach to lead the team, arguing that such a coach would better understand the team and its dynamics.

He urged the federation to act swiftly in appointing a head coach ahead of the qualifiers and the AFCON tournament.

“All hands must be on deck. We want to try and qualify for the World Cup,” Eguavoen stated on Kennis FM. “March is just around the corner. If we have to do something about the team, we need to do it quickly.

“That person should come in as soon as possible, settle down, so we can discuss, tweak things, exchange ideas, and plan the way forward. The earlier, the better.

“We should stay at home for the choice of head coach,” he proposed. “The technical crew has to be expanded, but the head coach should be homegrown because we understand the situation and feel the pulse of the people.”

The Nigerian football community now awaits the NFF’s decision on the next coach to lead the Super Eagles in their campaign this year. Whether foreign or home-based, fans are hoping for better results from the team.
