Onyemaechi, who has 11 international caps for Nigeria, arrived in Athens on Thursday to undergo medical tests and sign a three-and-a-half-year contract with Olympiacos, according to Greek outlet Parapolitika.

The 25-year-old’s departure from Boavista ends a productive spell in Portuguese football, where he made 77 appearances, scoring five goals and providing four assists since joining in 2020.

Olympiacos secured Onyemaechi’s services after agreeing on terms with Boavista, who were reportedly seeking to retain a percentage of any future transfer profit.

However, the deal nearly faltered as Benfica and Fenerbahce made late bids to hijack the move, with Trabzonspor also expressing interest earlier in the transfer window.

Onyemaechi’s stock rose after an impressive campaign with Boavista, where he featured in all 18 league matches this season, contributing three goals and one assist. Known for his pace, physicality, and versatility, he can operate across the left flank, making him a valuable asset for Olympiacos as they aim to strengthen their defensive options.

The defender was a key part of Nigeria’s squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

This transfer is expected to provide a much-needed financial boost for Boavista, who are dealing with FIFA restrictions and are seeking reinforcements in the winter transfer window. Onyemaechi’s exit, however, leaves a gap in their backline as they prepare to face Braga this weekend.

For Olympiacos, Onyemaechi’s arrival strengthens their push for domestic and European success. The Greek club, currently competing in the Europa League, sees the Nigerian as a long-term solution to their defensive needs. The deal is set to be officially announced within the next 24 hours.
