Ligue 1 side continue Ndidi chase despite Van Nistelrooy’s comment

Eight-time French Ligue 1 winners, AS Monaco, have continued their pursuit of Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, despite Ruud Van Nistelrooy's statement, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Genk midfielder last played for Leicester in their 2-2 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion in the first week of December. He was withdrawn in the 52nd minute after suffering a hamstring injury.

The Foxes are currently 19th on the English Premier League table and have won just one game from six in the league since the Nigerian last played for the club. They head to London Stadium to take on Tottenham Hotspur today.

As per French outlet, L’Equipe, AS Monaco are keen on securing the services of the Nigerian international and want to complete the move as soon as possible.

Leicester City head coach, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, has made it clear that the versatile midfielder will not exit the King Power Stadium under any circumstance this month.

“No, of course not. Wilfred is a key player and person in the squad and in the club and I’m glad he is nearly there to help the team again. We know how much we’ve missed him and we know we need him. Wilf is key in the coming months, a key part of this team that can get us out of this situation,” the former Manchester United striker said as previously reported by Soccernet.ng.

According to Caught Offside, Ndidi isn't against a move to Monaco, and a possible agreement can be reached in the coming days between the AFCON bronze-medallist and the French Ligue 1 side, leaving the ultimate decision with Leicester City.

Adolf Hütter's side are currently 3rd on the French Ligue 1 table, thirteen points behind Paris Saint-Germain, and are hoping to sign Ndidi on loan with an option to buy.

Time for Ndidi to move on from Leicester?

Since joining the Foxes from Genk in the winter transfer window of 2017, Ndidi has been a first-team player at the King Power Stadium. He has played 289 games for the 2021 FA Cup winners, scoring 18 goals and providing 21 assists.

His contract with Leicester City ran out last summer, and after offering himself to several clubs, penned a new three-year deal with the EFL Championships winner, with the hopes that Van Nistelrooy's side will stay in the English top-flight.

This term, Leicester have been dreadful in the English Premier League and are desperate to secure safety in the top-flight. A potential Ndidi exit would all but seal their relegation fate, and it would be unwise to let the Nigerian go.

On Ndidi's side, he has spent the last seven years in England, and a move abroad could pose a potential challenge. However, at 28, the Nigerian will want to play as many games at the top level of football.

Ultimately, Ndidi staying or leaving Leicester City will most likely be based on where the club stand on the Premier League table at the end of the season.
