Leeds United overtake Panathinaikos in the race for Nigeria’s ninth all-time highest goalscorer

Leeds United have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign Sevilla forward Kelechi Iheanacho, with the Nigerian international reportedly keen on a return to England, Soccernet.ng understands.

The 28-year-old is expected to leave the La Liga side this winter after a challenging stint in Spain, which has drawn out stern reactions from Super Eagles great, Finidi George.

According to reports from ScoreNigeria, Leeds are in advanced discussions to secure the former Manchester City and Leicester City striker. It remains unclear whether the Whites will sign Iheanacho on loan or agree to a permanent deal before the transfer window closes on 3 February.

Sevilla are said to be open to parting ways with the Nigerian forward, especially after nearing a deal for Montpellier’s Akor Adams, another Nigerian striker.

Iheanacho joined Sevilla on a free transfer last summer but has struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single La Liga goal this season.

Iheanacho, who is Nigeria’s ninth all-time top goalscorer with 15 goals in 57 international appearances, has turned down a move to Greek Super League side Panathinaikos.

Despite interest from the Athens-based club, Iheanacho and his representatives reportedly decided against the switch, citing ambitions to find a more competitive opportunity.

Iheanacho could be an added attacking asset as Leeds United target promotion back to the Premier League. The striker was instrumental in Leicester City’s successful promotion campaign last season and has a proven track record in English football.

Iheanacho won the FA Cup and FA Community Shield double with Leicester City in 2021. The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup winner added those honours to the Football League Cup he lifted at Manchester City in 2016.

Across 296 games for English clubs in all competitions, Iheanacho overall record reads an impressive 82 goals and 41 assists.
