Valenciennes FC legend, Eric Chelle, has openly expressed his gratitude to Algerians and MC Oran, as he takes charge of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former Mali boss was tempted by the offer to lead the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions following the announcement by the Nigeria Football Federation last week.

The 47-year-old left the club on a high note, with his team defeating USM Sétif with a difficult 1-nil victory which sent them to the quarter-final of the Algeria Cup.

Speaking after the clash, Chelle candidly described his decision as selfish but emphasised that the opportunity to manage a team like Nigeria was too big to overlook.

“I have the chance to join the best team in Africa and one of the best in the world. It's true that I'm very selfish. But once again, I thank the Algerians, as well as the Oran public for the welcome,” Chelle said as quoted by Mediafootdz.

He went on to acknowledge the support he received during his time at MC Oran, and expressed appreciation for the management, staff, and players.

“I also thank my management who has always put me in the best conditions, as well as my staff and all my players,” he added.

Chelle’s move to Nigeria comes with high expectations, as he prepares to take charge of the Super Eagles’ B campaign in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.

The Malian tactician, who led Mali’s Aiglons close to the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, now faces the challenge of securing a World Cup ticket for Nigeria and leading them to glory at the 2025 AFCON tournament.
