Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is on the verge of signing a three-year deal with 16-time Süper Lig champions Beşiktaş, despite strong interest from Trabzonspor, Soccernet.ng reports.
According to reports circulating in the Turkish media, the towering Nigerian forward is set to make a high-profile return to Turkish football after a standout spell with Trabzonspor.
Onuachu joined Southampton in the 2023 January transfer window for a fee in the region of €18 million from KRC Genk, but his time in Hampshire has been a struggle, failing to score in his 20 appearances for the club.
His impressive performance during his season-long loan spell with the Black Sea Storm—scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 31 appearances—has left a lasting impression, with Süper Lig clubs now competing for his signature.
Beşiktaş appear to be leading the race for the Nigerian striker despite competition from rivals Trabzonspor. Reports from 61saat, citing Fotomaç, indicate that Beşiktaş management has tabled a lucrative three-year deal for the towering forward.
Onuachu, who has been on Trabzonspor’s radar for a permanent deal, is reportedly edging closer to donning the iconic black and white jersey.
Further reports suggest that discussions between Beşiktaş and Southampton are progressing well, with only a few formalities left to finalise the transfer.
The 29-year-old—recently nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award for a goal during his time at Trabzonspor—is expected to bolster Beşiktaş’s attacking options as they aim for a strong league campaign.
The Nigerian attacker’s future at Southampton remains uncertain following the recent sacking of Russell Martin after a disappointing defeat to Tottenham that left the Saints at the bottom of the Premier League table.
It is suggested that Onuachu might still have something to offer the Saints following his stellar performance with Trabzonspor. However, his fate depends on the decision of the next head coach, who will determine whether to keep him, send him out on loan, or sanction a permanent exit.
So far this season, Onuachu has made just eight appearances for Southampton, totalling 151 minutes, shows his lack of playing time at the club. This suggests Southampton may still entertain offers for the Nigerian striker during the transfer window.
