Super Eagles forward Moses Simon played a pivotal role in FC Nantes’ 1-0 victory over Rennes in the highly anticipated Breton derby, Soccernet.ng reports.
Both teams, struggling in the lower half of the Ligue 1 table, remained deadlocked until the 89th minute when the Super Eagles winger fired in a late strike to hand the hosts all three points.
The Nigerian international dazzled his way through Rennes’ defence before unleashing a curling shot into the top-right corner of the net. The goal has since been hailed as a wonder strike.
However, in his post-match reaction, Simon downplayed the goal’s brilliance, focusing instead on its importance to the team.
“I can’t say it was magical because I already did it against Lens (2022-2023 season). So, I think it was the perfect moment, especially in the derby. We needed the points, that’s the most important thing for us. We got them, and we are very happy,” Simon said told DAZN.
The victory provided a crucial boost for Nantes, who had been winless since August and were in desperate need of momentum in their Ligue 1 campaign.
With Simon’s heroics, the Canaries was able to secure vital points and also deliver a morale-boosting win against their fierce rivals.
The Nigerian international has been in fine form this season, further firming his reputation as a reliable player for Nantes.
