Rangers coach Philippe Clement has defended Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers despite his penchant for missing chances, Soccernet.ng reports.
Rangers joined Rangers last year and he has registered 31 goals and 12 assists in 73 appearances. But despite his decent number of goal contributions, many Rangers fans believe he could do better.
The 29-year-old Super Eagles striker has gotten a penchant for missing very easy chances. And this has put him on the receiving end of jibes and jeers from Gers fans.
Nonetheless, Dessers has not let it get to him. This season, he has produced nine goals and three assists in 19 games. Coach Clement has also kept him as first choice despite the presence of Danilo and Hamza Igamane.
Dessers scored the crucial goal for Rangers in their 1-0 win over Hearts on Sunday. And after the game, when queried about the criticism that Dessers has faced, Clement jumped to his defense as he believes the Nigerian is being specially targeted.
“He gets a lot of criticism about his missed chances. But maybe other strikers in the league get much less criticism although they miss more chances and score less goals,” Clement said, per Premier Sports.
“That’s something that’s been going on, but the most important thing is that he’s not living that life and he’s just giving his best every time for the team. And he’s scored a lot of goals also.
It is not the first time that Clement is jumping to Dessers’ defense as he has previously highlighted that the Nigerian striker is working hard at converting more chances.
With the international break already here, Dessers will be looking to improve and start scoring more goals for the Gers.
