“We can’t pay him” – Finidi confirms Rivers United’s transfer stance on former West Brom star

Former West Bromwich Albion striker Brown Ideye

Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, has confirmed the club’s interest in securing former West Bromwich Albion striker Brown Ideye, despite financial constraints, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ideye, 36, is a free agent after leaving Kuwaiti side Al-Yarmouk and has been training with Rivers United in Port Harcourt, sparking rumours of a potential return to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).

The experienced forward, who has had a distinguished career in Europe with clubs like Dynamo Kyiv, Sochaux, and West Brom, began his football journey in Nigeria.

Ideye first made a name for himself with Bayelsa United before playing a key role in Ocean Boys’ NPFL title win in 2006.

Now back in Nigeria, Ideye could be set for a local comeback, but finances pose a hurdle.

Coach Finidi George admits that while the club cannot meet Ideye’s salary demands, they are eager to secure his services because of the wealth of experience he brings.

“Yeah, there is every likelihood that he will join us. He wants to give back. That is the most important thing. He has that hunger. We’ve seen that in Ahmed Musa,” Finidi told SportsBoom.

“If he is willing to do that, I think I will welcome him. He is giving back. We can’t pay him.”

Ideye’s situation mirrors that of Ahmed Musa, who returned to the NPFL with Kano Pillars, making a significant impact with three goals in five appearances.

Finidi believes Ideye could offer similar contributions, not just on the pitch but as a mentor to the younger players.

“The impact has been immediate,” Finidi said.

“You can see the younger players trying to impress, learning from his movement, his tactical awareness, and his ability to handle pressure.

“Brown is very approachable, and he’s been open to giving advice and sharing his experiences in Europe and with the national team.”

Rivers United have been in exceptional form this season, remaining unbeaten after eight matches, with six wins and two draws. They currently top the NPFL table with 20 points, two clear of closest challengers Remo Stars.
