“The boys were jittery” – Aliyu Zubairu vows to bring out Nigeria’s best as Flying Eagles set up Niger clash

Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has assured Nigerians that his team will bring their best game to the U20 AFCON qualifying semifinal on Saturday, where they will face Niger, Soccernet.ng reports.

Reflecting on the team’s journey so far, Zubairu emphasised the importance of growth and adaptation, noting the improved performance in the decisive 2-1 victory over Cote d’Ivoire.

“The boys were jittery in the first game, and that’s usually what you get in an opening game, but today you could see that it was a much-improved team,” Zubairu said after the match.

Zubairu’s side had suffered a tough start to the tournament, losing 1-0 to Burkina Faso on the opening day.

However, they rallied in the second match against the Ivorians, securing a come-from-behind win and earning a spot in the knockout stages.

“In the semifinal, you will see a better Nigerian team,” he assured. “We cannot compromise because we have to qualify for the U20 AFCON.”

The hard-fought win over Cote d’Ivoire clinched Nigeria’s place as Group B leaders, tied on points and goals with the Ivorians but advancing by scoring more than Burkina Faso.

After a goalless first half, the Junior Elephants initially took the lead early in the second half, but Enyimba winger Clinton Jephta quickly restored parity for Nigeria.

Striker Kparobo Arierhi, who had only featured in the encounter after passing a late fitness test, netted the winning goal shortly after.

Also influential in the game was goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, chosen over Nathaniel Nwosu, who made several crucial saves, including one in the dying moments to preserve Nigeria’s lead.

As Group B winners, the Flying Eagles are set to take on Niger, the Group A runners-up, in the semifinal.

Both finalists of this tournament will qualify for the U20 AFCON, scheduled for January in South Africa.
