The Super Eagles of Nigeria and their officials have been stranded at Al Abraq Airport in Libya for several hours after their flight was unexpectedly diverted from Benghazi, their original destination, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian national team, set to face Libya in the second leg of the crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier, had been scheduled to land in Benghazi, where the Nigerian Football Federation had made transport arrangements.

However, just an hour before arrival, their chartered flight was diverted to Al Abraq which is a city over two hours away by road from their intended destination.

Upon landing, the Super Eagles were held at the airport for over four hours with no transport provided by the Libyan Football Federation, leaving the team in a state of confusion.

“4 hours after arrival, still at the airport. Also, still have a 2-hour drive to the hotel,” wrote Super Eagles defender Tanimu Benjamin on his social media page as he expressed his frustration.

The NFF, having prepared for the team’s arrival in Benghazi, was caught off guard by the last-minute diversion.

Despite scrambling to make alternative transport arrangements, the Nigerian delegation was reportedly locked in at the airport, with local authorities refusing to open the gates for their exit.

This unprofessional behaviour has raised concerns about the treatment of the Super Eagles, especially as they prepare for an important match. As of now, the team still faces a two-hour drive to reach their hotel, adding to the already taxing situation.
