“I have not retired” – AFCON-winning former Lazio ace eyes Super Eagles comeback after 6-year absence

Former Lazio and Trabzonspor midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has reaffirmed his availability for the Nigeria national team, dismissing rumours of his retirement, Soccernet.ng reports.

Currently playing for Serie D side Avezzano, Onazi, who earned 52 caps for the Super Eagles, last featured for the national team in 2018 but insists he is ready for a recall.

Speaking with Brila.net, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner made it clear that he remains committed to representing his country.

“I have not retired. If they call me an ex-international, I don’t know why, but anyway it is okay,” Onazi stated.

His comments put to rest speculations surrounding his international future, particularly after a series of injuries led many to believe he was no longer in consideration for the Super Eagles.

The 36-year-old tireless midfielder is also not helped by playing for a club in the fourth division of the Italian football system.

Onazi first burst onto the scene with the national team in 2012, making his debut under legendary coach Stephen Keshi.

Over the years, the dynamic midfielder played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON triumph and represented the country at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.

Despite his absence from recent squads, Onazi remains hopeful of adding to his impressive international career, which includes one goal and four assists.

Though injury issues have plagued him in recent years, Onazi continues to ply his trade in Italy, where he joined Avezzano in 2023.

The 30-year-old’s honours include winning the Coppa Italia with Lazio in 2013 and lifting the Turkish Cup with Trabzonspor in 2020.

NB: Would you want coach Eguavoen to hand Onazi a call-up to the Super Eagles? Leave your comments in the space provided below.

Onazi is far past beyond his prime, hence, calling him up would not be a reasonable decision. If he wants to get called up he needs to prove himself worthy.

if he is still good enough, he shouldn’t be playing in Series D

One of the hardest fighters on the football pitch whenever he plays and one of the most loyal whenever called to come over without disappointment. We shall LOVE to see him at least once again. Please let Eguavon give him to us NOW NOW.
Let’s pay back his Patriotism. He is not old and still has a club.
