Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at Nigerian defender Bright Osayi-Samuel despite Fenerbahce’s convincing win at home to Bodrum FK on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Osayi-Samuel was involved from start to finish as goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Edin Džeko secured a 2-0 victory for Fenerbahce, ending a three-game winless streak.
Mourinho is convinced his team should have won the game by a bigger margin with Fenerbahce firing 19 shots at goal and creating four big chances.
Osayi-Samuel was guilty of missing one of those big chances in the first half of the encounter. The Super Eagles full-back opted for the spectacular finish when a simple assist could have resulted in another goal for the home side.
Despite admitting his pleasure at Fenerbahce picking up the maximum points on offer, Mourinho was not impressed by Osayi-Samuel’s selfish disposition.
“I’m happy for the 3 points, but it was sad that we couldn’t create and capitalize on so many chances,” Mourinho said as per Kontraspor.
“We scored a goal from a rebound. Irfan Can Kahveci’s volley was nice, and Osayi-Samuel had a position in the first half, but he was selfish there. We could have finished the match in the first half, but we couldn’t.”
The latest win lifts Fenerbahce to third place on the Super Lig table with 20 points from their first nine games.
Mourinho and his men are, however, five points shy of champions and bitter rivals Galatasaray.
League leaders Galatasaray, boasting reigning Africa Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, could extend their advantage at the summit when they host Besiktas on Monday night.
