Galatasaray explain why Victor Osimhen masks are no longer allowed in stadiums

Galatasaray have officially banned fans from wearing Victor Osimhen’s iconic mask in stadiums, citing safety concerns and compliance with sports regulations, Soccernet.ng reports.

This comes after the Nigerian striker’s protective face mask became a popular symbol among supporters since his arrival at the Turkish champions on loan from Napoli.

In an official statement, the club addressed the rising trend of fans wearing Osimhen’s mask to games, a tribute to the Super Eagles striker who has worn the mask since sustaining a severe head injury in 2021.

Galatasaray expressed gratitude for the fan enthusiasm but reminded them of important safety measures.

“The iconic mask of the great Galatasaray player, Victor Osimhen, continues to attract great attention at GSStore! We would like to thank you for the great interest you have shown in our mask and would like to make an important reminder for a safe match enjoyment,” the club announced.

However, the statement also highlighted a key regulation.

“We would like to inform you that masks will not be allowed into the stadium on match days by the sports law, and we kindly request that this rule be taken into consideration in terms of compliance with the stadium rules.”

Galatasaray emphasized the importance of fan safety:

“We strongly recommend that you take the necessary precautions for your safety and compliance with the stadium rules. We wish you enjoyable and safe match days.”

Osimhen’s mask, a necessity after a collision with Milan Skriniar in 2021, has grown to symbolise resilience, both in Napoli and now with Galatasaray.

Despite his bright start to the season, contributing two goals and four assists in just two games, Osimhen is currently sidelined with an injury sustained against Kasimpasa.

The ban on the mask during match days may be disappointing for fans, but Galatasaray insist it is necessary to ensure safety and adherence to stadium regulations.
