Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen came close to scoring his first goal for Galatasaray during their UEFA Europa League opener against Greek champions PAOK Thessaloniki, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Super Eagles star, who joined the Turkish giants on loan from Napoli, had a significant impact on the game despite the setback.
Osimhen, eager to make his mark, was quick to threaten the opposition’s defence. Within just 20 seconds, he had Galatasaray’s first chance, but his header went wide.
The match remained goalless until the 48th minute when Osimhen played a pivotal role in breaking the deadlock.
Connecting with a Dries Mertens corner, Osimhen’s powerful header seemed destined for the bottom corner, but Ghanaian defender Rahman Baba was in place to block it.
However, the ball deflected off the former Chelsea man and was credited as an own goal.
Despite being denied the goal, Osimhen’s contribution didn’t go unnoticed. His teammates celebrated with him, acknowledging his effort, but officially, the Nigerian forward remains without a goal for the reigning Turkish champions.
Undeterred, Osimhen continued his excellent form, providing a crucial assist for Yunus Akgün’s goal.
With his contribution, Osimhen etched his name into his personal record books.
According to Opta Can, this was the first time the forward had provided assists in three consecutive matches during his professional club career.
His assists came in Galatasaray’s games against Rizespor, Fenerbahçe, and now PAOK.
Looking ahead, Osimhen will be eager to break his scoring drought when Galatasaray face Kasımpaşa in their upcoming Turkish Super Lig fixture.
