Sparta Prague striker Victor Olatunji has been making headlines, especially after his memorable debut in the UEFA Champions League, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian forward scored and assisted in his first appearance in Europe's premier competition, becoming the first Nigerian player to do so.
Despite his impressive performances, Olatunji remains uncapped at the international level, but he hopes that a Super Eagles call-up could be in his future.
In an interview with Blesk, the 25-year-old shared his thoughts on a variety of topics, including his admiration for former Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo, his passion for football, and his unique connection to Cristiano Ronaldo.
On his desire to represent Nigeria, Olatunji explained,
“It is a big goal for any young player, especially for us Nigerians. We are proud to play for our country. Just wearing a green jersey and an eagle emblem will give a player motivation.
“He will realize that he represents a country of more than 220 million people. And that makes him work with all his heart.”
When asked whether anyone from the national team had reached out to him, Olatunji responded, “Not yet,” but the striker remains hopeful that his performances will earn him a spot with the Super Eagles.
Olatunji also revealed that his goal celebrations pay tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Exactly, mainly because of his (Ronaldo's) ability and hard work on and off the field. That inspires me, I want to be the same,” Olatunji said.
Olatunji continued, “I never met him and he never wrote to me. Unfortunately, he is no longer playing in the Champions League, so at least with this celebration I am reminding him of what he accomplished in this competition.”
The Nigerian forward, who has scored six goals in fifteen appearances for Sparta Prague this season, also spoke about his love for Ighalo, calling him a key inspiration:
“Several strikers have inspired me, most probably Odion Ighalo, who shone in the Premier League. I really love that!”
Beyond football, Olatunji enjoys gospel music and finds solace in Nigerian cuisine, particularly amala, a traditional Yoruba dish.
Lol, he indeed loves Amala. Saw him eating Amala yesterday at the African restaurant in Prague.
