NPFL: Finidi George triumphs over former apprentice as Rivers United drown Enyimba

Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George led Rivers United to their third win of the season after defeating former champions Enyimba at the Yakuku Gowon Stadium, Soccernet.ng reports.

Rivers returned to action in the Nigeria Premier Football League with a fixture against Enyimba. The former NPFL championship had been in fine form since Finidi took over, winning two and drawing one of their first three games of the campaign.

It was Finidi’s first time playing against Enyimba, where he left last season to take up the Super Eagles coaching role. And Enyimba’s coach Yemi Olarenwaju was his assistant during his time at the club.

River United got a dream start, with Friday Ubonh giving them the lead after just 17 minutes. Enyimba put up a dogged fight against Rivers United, but they failed to score before the end of the first half.

In the second half, the People’s Elephants put up a dogged fight, but they were profligate in front of goal. Rivers United eventually put the game to bed after Jackson Seiyefa scored their second in the 87th minute.

After 90 minutes of action, the game ended 2-0 in Rivers United’s favour. The win keeps Rivers United in second place while Enyimba sit 6th on the NPFL.
