Nigeria’s Super Eagles stay ahead of South Africa and Ghana in new FIFA ranking

Nigeria men's national team has maintained their position at 39th in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola Men’s Rankings for September 2024, released on Thursday, September 19, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles saw no change in their fortunes despite mixed results in their recent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers earlier in the month.

The three-time African champions earned four points from their opening two matches, with a 3-0 victory over Benin and a goalless draw against Rwanda.

While the team’s performances were solid, these results did not significantly impact their overall ranking.

Nigeria saw a marginal drop in points, losing 0.91, taking them from 1498.93 to 1498.02. However, this minor decrease did not alter their standing on the global stage or within Africa.

The Super Eagles remain the sixth-best team on the continent, trailing behind African heavyweights Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire, and Tunisia.

Further down the list, Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo round out Africa's top ten, with South Africa slipping to 11th and Ghana dropping to 14th after their AFCON qualifying defeat to Angola.

Globally, the top ten teams remain unchanged, with Argentina holding the top spot, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil. Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Colombia, and Italy.

As Nigeria look ahead to their October double-header against Libya in the continuing AFCON qualifiers, they will have the chance to improve their standing before the next FIFA rankings are released on October 24, 2024.

Positive results in these upcoming fixtures could propel the Super Eagles higher both on the African and global rankings.
