FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria drawn against hosts, Ecuador, and New Zealand

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team faces a thrilling challenge at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after being drawn in Group A alongside hosts Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and New Zealand, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Flamingos will kick off their campaign on Wednesday, 16 October 2024 against New Zealand. They will then face Ecuador on Saturday, 19 October 2024, before rounding off the group stage with a potentially crucial encounter against hosts Dominican Republic on Wednesday, 23 October 2024.

As three-time quarterfinalists in the competition (2010, 2012, and 2022), Nigeria has earned a reputation as a formidable force on the global stage.

With talent in the squad, the U-17 girls are widely tipped to advance to the knockout stages. Head coach Bankole Olowookere will aim to guide his young side through what is expected to be a highly competitive group.

The Dominican Republic, making their debut as hosts, could pose a tricky challenge, spurred on by home support, while Ecuador will also be eager to make an impact.

However, Nigeria's stiffest competition for the top spot will likely come from New Zealand, a team that has consistently reached the knockout stages in recent editions.

Given Nigeria’s track record and tactical strength, they are widely seen as one of the favourites to advance to the next round, but nothing can be taken for granted in this group.
