Trabzonspor’s pursuit of Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu is back in full swing, as the Turkish club has returned to negotiations with Southampton, aiming to secure the striker’s services permanently.
Soccernet.ng earlier reported that the Turkish Super Lig giants are determined to land the 29-year-old after a successful loan spell last season, despite previous setbacks in negotiations.
Onuachu, who scored 17 goals and provided four assists during his loan at Trabzonspor, has remained the club’s top transfer target, even as they considered alternatives like former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst.
The Nigerian striker’s impressive form in Turkey has made him a key focus for Trabzonspor as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.
Southampton, however, have been firm in their valuation, reportedly demanding €10 million for the towering striker.
Trabzonspor’s earlier offers, including a €7 million bid plus €2 million in add-ons, were turned down by the Saints, who acquired Onuachu from Racing Genk for €18 million last year.
In a fresh attempt to close the deal, Trabzonspor have submitted a new proposal involving a player-plus-cash offer, according to Fotomac.
The Turkish side is said to have offered Southampton €7 million along with two players— Umut Bozok and Greek forward Taxiarchis Fountas — in exchange for Onuachu. This bid surpasses Trabzonspor’s previous record transfer fee, highlighting their determination to secure the Nigerian star.
The negotiations are influenced by the unique position of Southampton’s CEO, Rasmus Ankersen, who also serves as the chairman of Göztepe, another Turkish club.
This connection has played a role in the ongoing discussions, with Trabzonspor reportedly offering the two players to Göztepe as part of the deal.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Southampton will accept this latest offer, but Trabzonspor’s persistence indicates they are not willing to give up easily.
Onuachu is contracted with Southampton until June 2026.
