Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was not included in Nottingham Forest’s matchday squad for their pre-season game against Millwall, Soccernet.ng reports.
Injuries have been a major hindrance for Awoniyi since he joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin two years ago.
The 26-year-old striker missed a significant part of his first season due to a groin injury. And in his second season, the issue resurfaced, causing him to miss three months of action.
Towards the end of last season, he returned to action, but his game time was limited because of his injury issues.
It seemed like Awoniyi had returned to full fitness this summer, especially as he shared images of himself doing some personal drills on the pitch.
However, the former Liverpool man attracted a lot of attention after he missed Nottingham Forest’s first pre-season game against Chesterfield.
Afterwards, coach Nuno Espirito Santo later revealed that Awoniyi was not fit enough for action. There were also talks that Awoniyi would not be part of their training camp in Spain.
But yesterday, Nottingham Forest shared a post of Awoniyi after he joined the club in Spain. With that development, there were expectations that he would be part of the club’s friendly game against Millwall on Tuesday.
However, he was not named in the matchday squad, and the coach has not spoken about his issue yet as at press time. But it could have been due to fatigue or just a precaution.
The Tricky Trees play Elche on Saturday, and coach Nuno will be hoping that Awoniyi is ready to go by then.
