Super Eagles star offered to Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers reunion playing key role

Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, has been offered to Scottish League Champions, Celtic, after his contract with Leicester City expired, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old is currently a free agent after leaving the King Power Stadium at the end of last month and is keen on a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

Ndidi had his best top-flight career under Rodgers. He lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield under the former Liverpool manager in 2021 before winning the EFL Championships with Enzo Maresca in the just-concluded season.

According to the Daily Record , Celts were made aware last night that Ndidi would be interested in a move to Parkhead, as the opportunity of playing in the UEFA Champions League entices the former Genk midfielder.

Sometime last season, Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for Ndidi, hinting that the midfielder would be a perfect fit in his system, and should further talks ensue, that could become a reality.

“He’s obviously a player with good athletic ability and works very hard. I always have that sort of clear, controlling player in the game. Sometimes, they’re a defensive type like him that can really press the game and play, or sometimes, it’s a more creative player, a playmaker from behind. He’s got so much talent and has been very impressive. He covers the ground so fast. His anticipation is very good; he reads the game and smells the danger. Having that type of player in there is very important,” the 51-year-old coach said in 2023, as revealed by The Scottish Sun.

However, Celtic face a difficulty as they might not be able to afford the wages of the Nigerian midfielder, but could have a way out if Matthew O'Riley's proposed £30m move to Southampton goes through, freeing up finances for Ndidi's welcome.

Ndidi played Nigeria's 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Benin Republic and South Africa, and couldn't herald the three-time AFCON winners to a victory.
