The Portuguese talisman issued an apology on his Instagram after their win, eliciting reactions from football enthusiasts, including Bayer Leverkusen forward Boniface, who showed support with three heart emojis.
Portugal and Slovenia were deadlocked in a 0-0 draw after regular time, despite Portugal being labeled as favourites to win the knockout round.
In extra time, Portugal had a chance to avoid penalties, but Jan Oblak saved Ronaldo's penalty with ease in the 103rd minute after a foul by Vanja Drkusic.
