Paul Onuachu displays what Russell Martin may miss if he leaves Southampton for Trabzonspor

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu showed glimpses of his deadly finishing during one of Southampton’s pre-season training sessions on Monday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Onuachu’s future has been in the balance this summer. The Nigerian striker joined Southampton from Genk last January after two outstanding seasons at the club.

Unfortunately for him, he joined Southampton at a point when the club was struggling to stay alive in the Premier League. The club also changed coaches at the time, and that affected him badly as it limited his playing time significantly.

Southampton eventually got relegated two seasons ago, and unsure of enough game time, Onuachu left the club for Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan last summer.

The 30-year-old striker impressed at the club, registering 17 goals and four assists in 25 appearances. Following his brilliance last season, there have been talks that Trabzonspor want to sign him permanently as his loan deal expired at the end of last season.

However, the drawback for the deal has been the fee. Southampton want up to €15 million for the Super Eagles star, but Trabzonspor are unwilling to match that fee.

Onuachu has since returned to Southampton and has resumed for pre-season with them despite the uncertainty about his future.

On Monday, the club shared a video of the player in training, and Onuachu was present alongside compatriot Jose Aribo. The Nigerian striker showcased his finishing skills, as he scored a goal during the training session.

The Saints have games lined up against Bordeaux, Montpellier, Oxford United, Millwall, Lazio, and Getafe for pre-season.

Onuachu will hope to get his future settled as soon as possible. If he impresses Russell Martin in the pre-season games, he could remain at the club this summer.
