Paris Olympics: Can Nigeria’s Super Falcons still qualify for the KO rounds after Brazil, Spain defeat?

The Super Falcons have endured an underwhelming start to life at the 2024 Paris Olympics, following two defeats, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria's situation in France has been made more precarious by the 1-0 loss to Brazil on Thursday and a similar defeat to Spain three days later.

The disappointing results have rooted the Super Falcons at the base of Group C with zero points and a -2 goal difference.

However, thankfully, the former African champions are still with a chance, admittedly very slight, of making it to the knockout rounds of the tournament.

According to tournament rules, the top two teams in each group will qualify automatically for the quarterfinals. However, the best two of the three third-placed teams will also make it to the last eight – a position the Super Falcons can now aim for.

Nigeria will trade tackles with Japan on Wednesday needing to win by at least two goals to overtake the Asians and climb into third place. Interestingly, the Super Falcons' only victory in Olympic Games history came in a 1-0 win over Japan in August 2004 – nearly 20 years ago.

Remarkably, a 2-0 win or more over Japan on matchday three could see Nigeria rise to second place should Spain beat Brazil in the other fixture of the day.

Nigeria's situation is further helped by the happenings in Group A.

Canada should have six points in Group A after winning their first two games but the reigning Olympic champions have seen their haul deducted following their illegal drone spying scandal. Now, they have no point but boast a crucial +2 goal difference.

The Canadians will be hard-pressed to beat Colombia in their last match. A victory for any of these two teams or even a draw will only strengthen Nigeria's case of qualifying in the event of a Super Falcons victory.

France will be expected to beat New Zealand in the other group fixture.

United States have already qualified for the quarterfinals following their two victories in Group B. Germany and Australia both have three points each while Zambia have zero points following their thrilling 6-5 loss to the Australians.

On July 31st, Germany will face Zambia while Australia will play for at least a draw against the USWNT.

Nigeria's game against Japan is slated for the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Wednesday, July 31st.
